When you feel a low blood sugar episode coming on it can make you feel panicky. You might instantly reach for the first sweet, carb-heavy thing you can find to prevent yourself from the crumminess of a low.
You’re not alone.
So many people with diabetes have found themselves in a very similar position. When faced with a low blood sugar episode, it can feel like the best thing to do is treat it quickly and with whatever food is most readily available. And while treating a low is definitely necessary, and should always be your priority– particularly in an emergent situation, this knee-jerk reaction can cause your levels to be on a roller coaster of peaks and valleys for the entire day (i.e. treating the low, then treating the high, then treating the low again, and so on).
But there are things you can do to avoid this.
