We have known about the development of a bionic pancreas for a while now, but it has finally been put to the test with this 4 year old Australian boy! Xavier Hames is the first person to get the pancreas outside clinical trials. You can imagine how excited his family must be!

The bionic pancreas was developed to predict hypoglycaemia up to 30 minutes before it happens and stop insulin delivery before a predicted event. The pump automatically resumes insulin delivery when glucose levels recover. This is absolutely huge news for Type 1 diabetics, and the world will be keeping an eye on Xavier’s health and development. While not a run of the mill procedure (yet), this boy offers hope to all Type 1’s out there.
