The Most Important Meal of the Day Is Crucial for Diabetics. Here’s Why

It is unfortunate that breakfast is typically the one meal that tends to get skipped. It is perhaps the most important meal of the day. After a good night’s rest, your body needs to be replenished with nutrients that give you energy. When you forget to eat breakfast, you are starving your body of these nutrients which could cause serious future health risks, especially if you have diabetes. Skipping breakfast is already putting you at a higher risk for health problems. As a diabetic, you are only making the possibility even more likely. It is even related to coronary heart failure and high blood pressure. On the flip side, studies have shown that people who eat breakfast demonstrate lower blood pressure.


Why Do Diabetics Need Breakfast?

Skipping breakfast puts you at a higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, and it can cause serious health issues for diabetics. It leads to symptoms of coronary heart failure such as the increase of blood pressure, insulin concentration, free fatty acids, triglycerides and a decrease in HDL cholesterol.

A Harvard study demonstrates that diabetics and overweight women are more at risk of these symptoms when they regularly skip breakfast. Fasting is stressful on the body, and it eventually leads to the problems that could ultimately end in heart failure. A higher percentage of obese women were likely to show signs leading to serious health risks when they skipped breakfast. Twenty-seven percent of young men also showed risks after skipping breakfast.

As a diabetic, a raise in blood sugar and insulin resistance can lead to major heart problems. You need to eat before noon; fasting until midday stresses the body out the most.


A Tel Aviv University clinical study showed that patients with Type 2 diabetes were more at risk for serious health issues when they skipped eating breakfast. The researchers studied people around the age of 59 who were Type 2 diabetics. They experienced a shocking increase in blood sugar and signs of insulin resistance. The study participants ate well-balanced meals for lunch and dinner, yet they experienced a significant loss of glucose for the remainder of the day.

The Benefits of Eating Breakfast

By eating breakfast, you are not only getting the nutrients you need to begin the day, but you are decreasing your insulin levels. It also lowers you blood sugar, which is important for diabetics. When you combine eating well with staying active, you are lowering your risk of health issues significantly.

Eating a healthy breakfast gives you the energy you need to get through the day. When you eat a healthy breakfast, you get even more of the nutrients you need, which then gives you a boost in energy. This is even better than drinking multiple cups of coffee when you wake up in the morning. Eating breakfast helps both fight fatigue and prevent other health risks, especially if you are a diabetic or if you are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.
