5. Classical Dance
Take part in the ballroom dancing craze to manage your diabetes while learning some impressive moves. Classical dancing provides a cardio workout along with muscular strengthening and toning. If ballroom isn’t your style, try a zumba or hip-hop dance class. Or just crank up the tunes in your living room and boogie-oogie from the comfort of your own home!
If you were in grade school the last time you road a bike, its time to dust off your skills and get back on one. Take the clothes off of the stationary bike in your basement and hop on, or head to the gym and join a cycling class. You can even take a leisurely ride around your neighborhood on a two-seater. Amp up the enjoyment level by exploring new routes in your neighborhood or inviting your friends to join you for a spinning class.
3. Nintendo Wii Fit
The Wii Fit from Nintendo gives you a simulated personal trainer right in the comfort of your home. Its programs include jogging, tennis and even basketball. The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research recently determined that 30 minutes on the Wii Fit can prove just as beneficial to diabetes management as a 30 minute brisk walk.
2. Water Aerobics
One of the greatest benefits of water aerobics is that it offers exercise in a setting that does not put pressure on your joints. It gives you all the cardio and strength building benefits of swimming, even if your swimming skills are less than spectacular. But if a class feels too structured, feel free to just take a few laps around the pool or play a pool game like Marco Polo or water volleyball to get that heart rate up! OR, turn it up a few notches and go SCUBA diving!
At first, you might think Live Action Role Play is a game for pimply twenty-somethings living in their parents’ basements. But we don’t see any reason why people of any age can’t have fun with sword fights, magical adventures on horseback, and whatever other creative activities their imaginations can come up with! This is your chance to dress up and play pretend in whatever manner you see fit!
