People with diabetes can still eat sweet snacks. The tough part is accounting for all the carbs! A good first step is learn to recognize sugar on food labels. Instead of just “carbohydrates,” examine ingredient lists for items such as dextrose, fructose, maltodextrin, molasses and high-fructose corn syrup. They are all just fancier words for sugar.
When you’re in the mood for a tasty snack, we recommend going with something that is lower in sugar. It will have less of an effect on your blood glucose and it’s just better for you! Here are a few of our favorite ideas:
1. Rice Cakes
Store bought or homemade rice cakes are low calorie, contain fiber (check the label) and a slightly sweet taste. Rice cakes also have small portion sizes that are handy when you’re counting carbs.
2. Graham Cracker Snacks
Many snacks use graham crackers as a base, and snack packs commonly contain 100 calories or less of the sweet treats, allowing you to monitor how much sugar you eat in one sitting. Plus they make you feel like a kid again!
Fruits are a great way to get carbs without a lot of processed sugar. Fruits do contain high amounts of fructose, but they also have vitamins, minerals and fiber as part of a healthy diet. Consider substituting applesauce for oils to sweeten a dish that calls for vegetable oil or canola oil.
4. Melon Salad
Combine a few types of melons, such as honeydew and cantaloupe, in a bowl with a drizzle of one tablespoon honey and one tablespoon fresh mint leaves. You get a high-fiber snack with a rainbow of fresh, sweet flavors.
5. Dark Chocolate Cookies
Dark chocolate has more health benefits than milk chocolate, so if you’re in the mood for chocolate, go dark! Dark chocolate cookies use cocoa powder and minimal sugar for chewy and crunchy goodness.
6. Brownie Bran Cookies
Mix a low-fat brownie recipe with high-fiber, unprocessed bran for a nutritious take on chocolate cookies. Instead of oil, use orange juice to help keep the moist cookies together.
7. Sugar-Free Cheesecake
There’s nothing better than cheesecake, and if it can be sugar-free and delicious, that’s a win-win!
