Doug Melton is a highly decorated scientist and professor. But one title that has driven him toward the stem cell breakthrough we covered recently is this: father. Twenty-three years ago, Melton’s infant son, Sam, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which swiftly launched Melton’s quest to find a cure. And, he may just have done so.
Stem cells–due to a decade-long debate on the issue of cloning, the phrase term, ‘stem cells’ brings with it an aura of taboo. Melton’s research, however, shows what stem cells can do when in the proper hands, and aimed at the proper target. He maintains that by using stem cells, we can change the way we approach disease prevention.
