Chef and author Leticia Moreinos Schwartz is familiar with the diabetes community. Her grandfather, for example, lived with type 2 diabetes for several years, up until a stroke ended his life. There’s more to it than that, though. Here are some eye-opening facts:

-13% of Hispanic adults have already been diagnosed with diabetes

-Diabetes is the leading cause of death in the Hispanic community

-The Hispanic community is twice as likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than other groups

These are the things Schwartz wants to help eliminate, both through awareness and through diet. The Brazlian native is the voice of Desafiando La Diabetes: Logra Tus Metas, which is a program that reaches out to Hispanic communities and provides authentic Hispanic dishes with a healthy twist.

Take a look at Schwartz discussing her efforts, and let us know what you think in the comments below!
