Halloween: Spooky, Silly, AND Diabetic-Friendly?! Here’s How
Halloween can be a stressful time for diabetic kids and their parents — but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some tips and tricks for making Halloween diabetic-friendly.
1. Select The Treats You Hand Out With Diabetics in Mind
If you plan on handing out candy, keep in mind that you may be stuck with a ton of leftovers, and plan accordingly by making them varieties that can help treat your child’s lows in the future. Consider handing out Halloween-themed treats (like squishy eyeballs, pumpkin-shaped erasers, and plastic spiders) or healthy, sugar-free snacks instead.
2. Look For Teal Pumpkins
Teal pumpkins indicate that the home has something besides candy for its trick-or-treaters. If you’re also offering candy-free treats, put a teal pumpkin on your porch to let children and parents know. Learn more about it here!
3. Remember That A Lot Of Walking Can Cause Lows
You know your child will be walking around excitedly, and that the adrenaline paired with exercise can affect her glucose levels during trick-or-treating and later that night. Keep an eye on her glucose levels, and pack juice or a healthy snack to treat her lows in case she doesn’t have anything suitable in her bag yet.
4. Moderation All Day
Treat the day like any other day where you have a special occasion, and tailor their meal plan so it allows them a couple treats to enjoy Halloween night, like a lollipop or some skittles.
5. After Trick-or-Treating, Go Through Their Stash With Them
Let your child pick out a few different pieces that he or she can eat throughout the next couple weeks. Then pick out options like Smarties or Skittles to be used as treatments for low blood sugar. Check out our helpful list here to see which candies pack the weakest punch of sugar.
6. Trade Candy For Other Treats
You can trade your child’s candy for a variety of things. Examples include one or two toys for all of it, 10 cents per piece of candy, or an extra minute of TV or computer time per piece of candy. Some parents, like Tonya Homme, utilize the “Halloween Fairy” method. After picking out select pieces, your child will leave all of the leftover candy out in a bowl overnight. Then, in the morning, there will be a new toy in its place! Magical!
7. Treat It Like A Fun Activity, Not A Tricky Chore
Relax. Have fun! Even if it’s your first year trick-or-treating, you got this. This is a night with a few more possible pitfalls, but also a night full of dressing up, laughing, and having a great time! Make it a memorable Halloween for all the right reasons.
