As you probably already know, diet is a key component to maintaining a healthy body, particularly when you have diabetes or another health condition.
But yes, in case you were wondering, it is perfectly okay to snack. In fact, snacking on small portions of healthy foods throughout the day can help keep your glucose levels steady. Aim for a snack that is a combination of fat, protein, and 15-30 grams of carbs. Keep your per-snack calorie count to about 100-200. High-fiber snacks are a good choice, as they tend to lower cholesterol and blood sugar.
Portion control is also crucial, of course. Bingeing on anything, healthy or unhealthy, has the potential to cause problems for diabetics (and anybody else, really). It’s important to pay attention to the serving size, and if you aren’t sure how much to eat, break out those measuring cups and spoons!

So what should you eat? Here are some creative snack ideas that are both delicious and nutritious to help you get through your day without succumbing to those cravings and other dietary pitfalls.
Everyone’s favorite. Cook 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels with a tablespoon of canola oil (or whatever oil flavor you like). And of course, the best part is the topping! While we don’t recommend a truckload of melted butter like you’ll see at the movies, your 1 cup serving size (a little over 6 grams of carbs by itself) can be easily dressed up with a quarter teaspoon of salt, garlic powder or allspice. Or if cheese is more your style, add a tablespoon of grated Parmesan!

Carrots with Ranch
15 baby carrots and two tablespoons of ranch may be just the thing to soothe that rumbly in your tumbly. Only about 15 or 20 carbs per serving, and plenty of vitamins too! Just don’t overdo it on that dressing.
