Seven Better Questions than “What Do You Do?”

We’ve all been there… we’re at a gathering and we’re introduced to someone new, and the first thing that gets asked is, “So what do you do?”

Telling someone what you do for a living doesn’t necessarily give them much insight into who you are or what you’re passionate about. Unless you’re one of the lucky few who really, truly, and passionately loves their job, there’s probably something else that you’d rather talk about!

So here are a few questions you can ask that will skip the small talk and launch a real conversation right away.

If you had infinite time and infinite resources, what would you want to do with your life?

This one is the very opposite of the “What do you do?” question. It goes to the heart of why we must work, and if we didn’t have to work, what we would do with our time, attention, and money. This is a great way to find out what people are passionate about!
