A new study from the University of Miami’s Diabetes Research Institute shows that hyperbaric oxygen therapy slows or even prevents Type 1 diabetes in mice, but it’s too soon to tell if the treatment will work in humans.

Oxygen therapy boosted the immune systems in mice, causing a 20-40% reduction of diabetes risk and slowing the progression of the disease.

“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a relatively non-harmful way of enhancing oxygen delivery to the tissues,” said Dr. Antonello Pileggi, the study’s senior author. “We were able to suppress the transfer of the disease before the onset of the disease.”
