We’ve all heard it: breakfast is the most important meal of the day! However, in reality, breakfast is often the most often ignored meal of the day. It’s not uncommon to rush out the door in the morning without getting anything to eat at all, or to simply not take the time to prepare a well-balanced meal.
It might not seem like a big deal, especially if you’re not someone who wakes up feeling particularly healthy. However, breakfast is the meal that gives your body (and your brain) the energy it needs to start the day. It’s also pivotal in ensuring you don’t overeat later in the day. Further, because there’s so much time between the previous night’s dinner and lunch, skipping breakfast can signal to your body that it’s time to fall into fasting mode. When this happens, and you finally do eat, your body is unsure when it will be fed again. This causes it to store fat to save for later, in the event that food remains scarce. However, because you aren’t actually fasting, this can lead to weight gain.
If you’re struggling to make the time each morning to prepare breakfast, consider meal prepping the night, or even the weekend, before. Try to offer yourself some variation, so you don’t get bored. And if you simply find yourself unmotivated to cook each morning, maybe it’s because you haven’t found healthy food that’s enticing!
