Vanessa is 8 years-old. She has a younger brother named David and a dog named Slinky. She enjoys reading and drawing, and wants to be a landscaper when she grows up. She also wears an insulin pump.

When her mother was pregnant with David, Vanessa began showing symptoms of diabetes, and shortly after his birth, she was diagnosed. In the video below, her parents discuss the difficulties they faced simultaneously raising a newborn and a child newly diagnosed with type 1.

Years later, they have managed to adjust, and while the fear associated with their daughter having diabetes is still present, they know they have a lot to be thankful for. Vanessa is one amazing young lady! She is smart, creative, and according to her mother, “a total daddy’s girl.” She also does a terrific job of managing her disease!
