There just might be some very exciting news on the horizon for people with diabetes!
If you’ve suffer from the condition, you’ve likely been warned of the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. And if you have high blood pressure, you’ve probably heard of Verapamil, a rather common blood pressure medication. Well, it’s recently served another purpose: researchers have recently used it to reverse diabetes in mice.
Thanks to a generous 3-year, 2.1 million dollar grant from the Juveneille Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), University of Alabama-Birmingham Comprehensive Diabetes Center researchers will soon begin testing Verapamil on humans with diabetes, in hopes that they can encounter similar results. If successful, the medication would be the first of its kind to actually enhance an individuals beta cell quantity.
