In a recent Huffington Post column, diabetes expert Dr. Mark Hyman discusses specific ways he believes Type 2 diabetes can be completely reversed, eliminating progression of the disease and the need for ongoing medical treatment.
Dr. Hyman notes that several large pharmacy chains market any number of “diabetes lifestyle” products — glucose monitors, blood pressure cuffs, lancets, medications, even magazines — all heavily promoted by their manufactures.
But Dr. Hyman believes that diabetes may not be a progressive disease requiring long-term medication and treatment. He points to a groundbreaking study published in the journal Diabetologia that showed Type 2 can be completely reversed in one to eight weeks with positive changes in lifestyle and diet. “If we have a known cure, a proven way to reverse this disease, shouldn’t we be focused on implementing programs to scale this cure?” Dr. Hyman asks.
Type 2 diabetes is growing at an exponential rate in the U.S. and throughout the world, but Dr. Hyman and others believe that common misconceptions about the condition are fueling the epidemic. He cites a study that showed that a dramatic change in diet (including protein shakes, a low glycemic load, and plant-based low-calorie foods) can reverse diabetes in one week: a better cure than any available drug can deliver.
Dr. Hyman offers the following regimen for reversing diabetes:
1. Eat a low glycemic, high fiber, plant-based diet of vegetables, beans, nuts, limited whole grains, fruit and lean animal protein
2. Exercise vigorously (running, biking, fast walking, etc.) for 30 minutes 4-5 times a week, with strength training for 20 minutes 3 times a week
3. Take a multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin D, and blood sugar and insulin balancing nutrients (including chromium and alpha lipoic acid)
