Can Wine, Combined with THIS Dinner, Offer Health Benefits to People with Diabetes? New Study May Have the Answer!

A new study out of Israel recently revealed that people with Type 2 diabetes could benefit from consuming a glass of red wine each day. Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers studied 224 patients with well-controlled Type 2 diabetes. Prior to the study, participants drank rarely or never (individuals at low-risk for abuse), which is important to note. People with Type 2 were chosen due to their increased likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and because they commonly possess lower levels of HDL cholesterol, which protects the heart.

The 224 participants were instructed to consume either mineral water, white wine, or red wine, each night with dinner — only one glass. They were also told to follow a Mediterranean diet, but were not given any calorie restrictions. Participants were monitored for two years, and were required to take questionnaires and come in for follow-ups throughout the course of the study. At the beginning of the study, 6 months in, and 24 months in, they received blood tests that allowed scientists to examine glycemic control, lipids, and liver function.


The red wine drinkers were found to be the big winners! Not only did they increase their HDL cholesterol levels compared to the water drinkers, they were the only group to decrease the components of metabolic syndrome, which includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, increased waist-focused body fat, and imbalanced cholesterol. Finally, in both red and white wine drinkers, triglycerides and fasting plasma glucose levels were lowered.
