If you have diabetes, you’ve likely encountered a lot of frustrating things surrounding people’s perceptions of what it means to have your condition. Many of those misconceptions likely center around what your diet should look like.
These encounters might include people who offer unsolicited advice about what you should (and should not) be eating. They might involve run-ins with ridiculous miracle diets offered by people who are trying to capitalize off of your condition. Maybe they simply come from well-meaning friends who want to tell you about a study they skimmed involving a spice that is guaranteed to cure diabetes.
Regardless of the source, or the intent, if you’ve had diabetes long enough, you’ve likely come up with something of a filter when it comes to navigating these moments. Because you know that the truth is, a “diabetic diet” is no different than the same diet that’s recommended to everyone:
Vegetables, fruit, lean meats, healthy fats, and whole grains. Exercise portion control. And when it comes to foods that are typically deemed “unhealthy,” it’s all about moderation.
